Punjab Plans to Replace Practical Exams with New Assessment System

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced a new package of examination reforms aimed at improving transparency and reducing malpractice across the province.

Speaking to the media, the minister said that after successfully controlling cheating during the first year, the government is now focusing on strengthening the overall assessment system.

Under the proposed plan, traditional practical exams will be replaced with multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to make the process more standardized and transparent. He added that the new paper pattern will promote concept-based learning, moving away from rote memorization.

The minister also shared that the government intends to introduce a constitutional amendment to allow students to apply for paper rechecking. However, the rechecking process will involve a higher fee due to the large number of candidates who apply each year.

Additionally, invigilators’ daily allowance will be increased to Rs. 5,000, and only those staff members who complete the required training will be permitted to supervise exams. The government will also involve university teaching assistants and seek cooperation from both public and private sectors to ensure smooth implementation of the reforms.

Rana Sikandar emphasized that these changes are part of a long-term strategy to make Punjab’s examination system more transparent, efficient, and fair for all students.
